一種是蜿蜒運動，所有的蛇都能以這種方式向前爬行。爬行時，蛇體在地面上作水平波狀彎曲，使彎曲處的後邊施力於粗糙的地面上，由地面的反作用力推動蛇體前進，如果把蛇放在平滑的玻璃板上，那它就寸步難行，無法以這種方式爬行了。

第二種是履帶式運動，蛇沒有胸骨，它的肋骨可以前後自由移動，肋骨與腹鱗之間有肋皮肌相連。

當肋皮肌收縮時，肋骨便向前移動，這就帶動寬大的腹鱗依次豎立，，但這時只是腹鱗動而蛇身沒有動，接著肋皮肌放鬆，腹鱗的後緣就施力於粗糙的地面，靠反作用把蛇體推向前方。

第三種方式是伸縮運動，蛇身前部抬起，盡力前伸，接觸到支持的物體時，蛇身後部即跟著縮向前去，然後再抬起身體前部向前伸，得到支持物，後部再縮向前去，這樣交替伸縮，蛇就能不斷地向前爬行。
