巴庫，源於波斯語「被風猛擊的城市」。如今的巴庫古城內仍然保留了12世紀時期的防禦城牆，石板路遍布全城。

因為歷史悠久，巴庫被分為內城和新城兩個部分，內城的街道狹窄，被老城牆包圍，是巴庫的核心區域，有世界文化遺產之稱的席爾旺沙宮、少女塔、古清真寺、沙馬赫門都在老城區。

而新城位於內城的南面，是因為一個世紀前石油工業的發展而興起的。

在巴庫老城，目光隨意的一瞥彷彿便是穿越了千年，古典與現代的完美結合，讓這座城市的每一個轉角都充滿了驚喜。

戈布斯抄坦岩石藝術文化景襲觀位於科布斯坦的西邊，距離亞塞拜然共和國首都巴庫大約40英里，於2007年在第31屆世界遺產委員會會議上被評選為世紀文化遺產。它本身屬於戈布斯坦國家保留地，為了保護區域內的古代雕刻、泥火山，在1966年被定為亞塞拜然國家歷史景觀。戈布斯坦國家保留地有著豐富的考古學意義，其中有超過60萬件5千至2萬年前的岩石繪畫，描寫的內容包括描述史前人類、動物戰爭、宗教舞蹈、鬥牛、賽艇、持矛戰士、駱駝商隊、太陽與星星。
