一天，唐僧師徒四人來到一座高山前，只見山勢險峻，峰岩重疊。走了一天的路，唐僧感覺飢餓，就讓孫悟空去找些吃的。悟空跳上雲端，四處觀看，見南山有熟透的山桃，便要摘些來給師父充飢。
悟空剛走，唐僧就被妖怪白骨精發現了。白骨精不勝歡喜，自言自語道：「造化！造化！都說吃了唐僧肉可以長生不老。今天機會來了！」它正要上前，見唐僧身邊有豬八戒和沙僧保護，就搖身變作美貌的村姑，拎了一罐齋飯，徑直走到唐僧面前，說是特地來請他們用齋的。唐僧一再推辭，八戒嘴讒，奪過罐子就要動口。
正在這時，悟空從南山摘桃回來，睜開火眼金睛一看，認出村姑是個妖精，舉起金箍棒當頭就打。唐僧連忙扯住悟空。悟空說：「它是個妖精，是來騙你的。」說著，就朝妖精劈臉一棒。妖精扔下一具假屍首，化作一縷輕煙逃走了。
唐僧責怪悟空無故傷人性命。悟空打開罐子，從裡面跳出來幾只青蛙、癩蛤蟆，根本沒有什麼齋飯。唐僧這才有些相信那村姑是妖怪。
師徒們吃了桃子繼續趕路。山坡上閃出一個年滿八旬的老婦人，手拄著彎頭竹杖，一步一聲地哭著走來。悟空見又是那妖精變的，也不說話，當頭就是一棒。白骨精見棍棒落下，又用法術脫了身，丟了具假屍首在路上。
唐僧一見，驚得從馬上摔下來，坐在地上，不由分說，一口氣念了二十遍緊箍咒。悟空頭痛難忍，連忙哀告。唐僧喝道：「你為何不聽勸說，把人打死一個，又打死一個？」「它是妖精！」唐僧非常生氣：「胡說！哪有那麼多妖精！你無心向善，有意作惡，你去吧！」悟空說：「師父若真不要我，就請退下我頭上的金箍兒！」唐僧大驚：「我只學過緊箍咒，卻沒有什麼松箍咒兒！」悟空說：「若無松箍咒，你還帶我走吧。」唐僧無奈：「我再饒你這一次，但不可再行凶了。」悟空忙點頭答應，扶著唐僧上了馬，繼續前行。
