巴库，源于波斯语“被风猛击的城市”。如今的巴库古城内仍然保留了12世纪时期的防御城墙，石板路遍布全城。

因为历史悠久，巴库被分为内城和新城两个部分，内城的街道狭窄，被老城墙包围，是巴库的核心区域，有世界文化遗产之称的席尔旺沙宫、少女塔、古清真寺、沙马赫门都在老城区。

而新城位于内城的南面，是因为一个世纪前石油工业的发展而兴起的。

在巴库老城，目光随意的一瞥仿佛便是穿越了千年，古典与现代的完美结合，让这座城市的每一个转角都充满了惊喜。

戈布斯抄坦岩石艺术文化景袭观位于科布斯坦的西边，距离阿塞拜疆共和国首都巴库大约40英里，于2007年在第31届世界遗产委员会会议上被评选为世纪文化遗产。它本身属于戈布斯坦国家保留地，为了保护区域内的古代雕刻、泥火山，在1966年被定为阿塞拜疆国家历史景观。戈布斯坦国家保留地有着丰富的考古学意义，其中有超过60万件5千至2万年前的岩石绘画，描写的内容包括描述史前人类、动物战争、宗教舞蹈、斗牛、赛艇、持矛战士、骆驼商队、太阳与星星。
